Alopecia Areata

What is Alopecia Areata?

OR Alopecia Areata is an autoimmune disorder that causes sudden hair loss, usually in circular areas of the scalp. It is a condition that can affect not only the appearance but also the psychology of the person, regardless of age or gender. The immune system mistakenly attacks the hair follicles, leading to temporary or, in some cases, prolonged hair loss. It usually does not cause damage to the follicle itself, which means that hair growth can return.

What are the symptoms?

  • Sudden appearance of small, round areas without hair on the head or body
  • Tingling or itching sensation before hair loss
  • Changes in the texture or shape of the nails

In more advanced forms, such as Alopecia Totalis or Alopecia Universalis, there may be complete hair loss from the head or even the entire body.

    Causes and risk factors

The exact cause remains unknown, but there appears to be a genetic predisposition. Stress, infections, and other autoimmune diseases (such as thyroiditis or vitiligo) may act as triggers.

    Diagnosis and Treatment

Diagnosis is usually made through a clinical examination by a dermatologist, while in some cases dermoscopy or skin biopsy may be necessary.

    Treatments include:

    • Topical corticosteroids or steroid injections
    • Immunotherapy to induce artificial inflammation and stimulate follicles
    • Minoxidil (local use)
    • Newer therapies with JAK inhibitors, under strict medical supervision

In cases where hair regrowth is impossible, solutions such as hair transplant or the use of special wigs can significantly improve the patient's image and self-confidence.

    Psychological Support

The psychological impact of alopecia is significant, especially in young people. Support from mental health professionals, as well as self-help groups, plays a crucial role in coping with the condition.

    In conclusion

Alopecia Areata can be shocking and distressing, but with proper diagnosis, support, and personalized treatment, many people can successfully manage the condition. Early intervention and education are key to successful treatment.
