Drug treatment
Drug treatment
During the early stages of hair loss, medication can be an effective way to slow or even reverse its progression.
At our clinic we can advise you on the most appropriate hair regrowth medication based on your individual characteristics. Medications can be used instead of surgery or, in some cases, in combination with surgery to optimize results.
Finasteride
Finasteride may be an excellent choice for men in the early stages of male pattern hair loss.
The treatment involves taking one tablet a day and blocks the formation of dihydrotestosterone (DHT), the hormone that causes hair follicles to shrink and ultimately inhibit hair growth. It can stabilize hair loss and even make hair thicker when used early enough. The best results are usually seen at the crown and mid-section of the scalp, but it can also improve thinning in the frontal area.
Finasteride is available by prescription only and is not recommended for women. Your doctor will discuss the benefits and possible side effects with you and advise you if it is a suitable option for you.

Minoxidil
Minoxidil comes in liquid or foam form and is applied directly to the scalp. It works by increasing blood flow to the hair follicles, thereby stimulating and prolonging the hair growth phase. It has been shown to help prevent further hair loss in 4 out of 5 men and women.
Like finasteride, minoxidil is a good choice in the early stages of hair loss. However, it benefits both men and women, and most products are available over the counter.
Our clinic team will explain the pros and cons of using medication for hair loss and advise you on the best products and habits to maintain the health of your scalp and hair.
